The Science

MEECE is an European FP7 project that uses predictive models to explore the impacts of both climate drivers (acidification, light, circulation and temperature) and human induced drivers (fishing, pollution, invasive species and eutrophication) on marine ecosystems.

The implementation of the EU’s Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) requires the application of an ecosystem-based approach to the management of human activities. Underpinning the delivery of the MSFD is the scientific challenge of investigating and understanding the sensitivities and potential responses of marine ecosystems, to both climatic change and the direct effects of human activity. If we do not understand how the ecosystem will respond to these multiple drivers we will find it very difficult to manage marine ecosystems.

For Stakeholders

Effective knowledge transfer requires communication between MEECE scientists and global users (e.g. policy makers, advisory bodies, research managers, conservation and user groups, management bodies), and results in the production and exchange of existing or new research-based knowledge in decision-making. Key MEECE target groups include, decision makers in both science and policy areas, SME interested in the application of knowledge, and the public as a whole.
